The ANTI-Antibiotic

So many of us are plagued by frequent colds, flus and other respiratory infections. Antibiotics are just a normal part of life, right? The thing is, the more frequently they are used, the less likely they are to work when you really need them. And, truth be told, they should never be our first line of defense. Antibiotics should be our last resort, and if we make smart choices in our daily lives, our immune systems will be able to function at an optimal level, making antibiotics largely unnecessary.

Each year, more than 100,000 people in the United States are hospitalized due to the flu and its complications. Yikes! I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be part of that statistic. So, what are these “smart choices” that we should be making to avoid joining the crowd of folks who are never more than a few inches from a box of kleenex all winter long?

Let’s Start With The Obvious

Wash your hands. It seems simple enough, but often, we’re so bogged down with the busy-ness of life that we don’t do it enough. Or, we skip the soap to speed up the washing process. Taking the time to thoroughly wash our hands with warm water and soap or using alcohol-based antibacterial foam or gel when soap and water isn’t readily available will help keep our hands free of germs.

Don’t skimp on fluids. Drinking plenty of water makes sure that your blood is well oxygenated, which helps your body systems to function properly.  More specifically, water helps your kidneys to flush out toxins. A build-up of toxins weakens your immune system, definitely not what you want when you’re trying to stay well.

Catch some Zzzz’s. The average adult needs seven to eight hours of sleep each night. When we cheat our body out of rest, we lower our immune system’s ability to respond when germ invaders are on the scene. Remember that bacteria and germs are all around us, keeping them out of our bodies entirely is next to impossible, so what we want is an immune system that’s ready to go on high alert and launch an attack to keep those germs from taking hold and knocking us down.

Avoid close contact. This should go without saying, but don’t allow yourself to be in close contact with those who are, or may be sick. Don’t share drinks, and for goodness sake, wash your hands after encounters in social situations that require shaking hands…even if the person didn’t appear to be sick.

Then Take It A Step Further

A daily multivitamin. Getting enough vitamins and minerals is essential to a healthy immune system. Unfortunately, our soils are depleted, so the nutrition available from the foods we eat just isn’t the same as it was for our parents and grandparents when they were our age. Supplementing with a quality pharmaceutical grade multivitamin helps to fill-in those nutritional gaps. It’s important to ensure that the nutrients reflected on the label are actually available for absorption by your body. Imagine that the nutrients from our multivitamin are like people waiting in line for an elevator at a busy hotel. Frequently when the doors of the elevator open, the elevator is already partially full, so only a few people waiting in line are able to get on board. The same is true with nutrients from pill-form vitamin supplements and our digestive system, except that vitamins aren’t like people. They don’t wait in line for the next elevator. Instead, they just move on down the digestive tract until they end up being eliminated as waste. I don’t know about you, but I like to get what I pay for, not flush it down the toilet. Supplementing with vitamins in isotonic form allows your body to more efficiently absorb the nutrients. I’ll write more in a future post about what that whole “isotonic” term means, but for now, suffice it to say that it’s highly superior to anything else out there. You can read about my preferred Multivitamin here, and there’s a children’s version, too.

Probiotics are essential. Probiotics are more than just good bacteria. They are disease fighters that help to keep us healthy and improve our immune response. The problem is that traditional antibiotics kill all bacteria in the body…the good and the bad. So, it’s especially important to supplement with quality probiotics if you’ve ever taken an antibiotic in the past. Many people immediately think of yogurt whenever probiotics are mentioned. But, let’s be clear: the manufacturing process for yogurt provides for the presence of some probiotic bacteria, but there’s a big difference between the “presence”  of probiotics and true probiotic benefits. Yogurt manufacturers tend to ignore this, and their marketing tries to make consumers believe something entirely different. So, what makes a “quality probiotic”? It’s not just a high total probiotic count, but it’s also the number of different strains from which those probiotics are derived. If you read the label, you’ll discover that products available at your local drugstore just don’t fit the bill. Click here to read about the product I recommend for adults. There’s also a great chewable option available for children, or those who have difficulty swallowing pills.

Grab an extra boost. Wellmune is one of the most talked about health & nutrition ingredients recently, and is clinically shown to promote a healthy immune system. Basically, it activates our immune cells so that they can respond more effectively when germs invade. Scientific studies have shown that Wellmune is beneficial for reducing upper respiratory tract infections, seasonal allergies, colds and flu, and more. When we combine Wellmune with the isotonic delivery system I mentioned before, we promote an immune system that helps form a solid foundation for wellness, and that helps us to stay healthy and energetic. I recommend turning to the immune boosting power of Isotonix Immune to help us keep up with the daily demands of life.
